Admixtures for Concrete: Concrete outside of the laboratory is a much-abused material, and the general attitude until recent years towards admixtures was one of disbelief or disinterest. Perhaps it is because concrete has been used for so long and has become commonplace that we do not regard it as a complex composite material. Admixtures are capable of imparting considerable physical and economic benefits with respect to concrete; although they are by no means a substitute for poor-quality mix ingredients, for the use of incorrect mix proportions, or for poor workmanship in transport, placing, compaction, and curing. To modify the properties of fresh Concrete, Mortar and Grout to:
- Increase workability without adding water or reduce water content while maintaining the same workability.
- Retard or accelerate the initial setting time.
- Reduce or prevent settlement or induce slight expansion.
- Adjust the rate and/or capacity for bleeding.
- Minimize segregation.
- Improve pumpability.
- Slow down the rate of slump loss.
- Retard or reduce heat evolution during early hardening.
- Accelerate strength development at early ages.
- Increase compressive, tensile, or flexural strength.
- Enhance durability and resistance to severe exposure conditions, including deicing salts.
- Reduce concrete permeability.
- Control expansion caused by alkali-aggregate reactions.
The following concrete admixtures are designed to enhance performance across various applications.
Normal Plasticizers
Versatile admixtures for concrete products to achieve 5% to 8% water reduction for a given workability.
Super Plasticizers
MULTIPLAST SUPER is a high-range water-reducing superplasticizer that enhances concrete workability or significantly reduces water content.
Super Plasticizers with Retardation
Multiplast Super R are super plasticizers with retardation properties, produced from processed lignosulphonates and sodium naphthalene sulphonate formaldehyde condensate
Accelerating Plasticizers
Accelerating admixtures for concrete products are used either to increase the rate of stiffening/setting of concrete or to enhance the rate of hardening and early strength gain.
Hiper Plasticizers
Hiper admixtures for concrete are designed to achieve a water reduction of 12% to 40% while maintaining the required workability or achieving a slump of 200 to 275 mm. These admixtures are used for concrete with a low water-to-cement (W/C) ratio.
Air Entraining Admixtures
Air-entraining and plasticizing admixtures are active chemicals that generate small, stable air bubbles throughout the concrete mix, enhancing its resistance to freezing and thawing.
Reinforcement Protection Additives
Sprayed Concrete Admixtures
Admixtures can be added to fresh concrete to enhance stability and control hydration (acting as a retarder) before spraying.
Shrinkage Reducing Admixtures
When added to concrete during the batching stage, shrinkage-reducing admixtures can significantly minimize both early and long-term drying shrinkage.
ASR Prevention Admixtures
These plasticizers/admixtures are added to concrete to mitigate Alkali-Silica Reactivity (ASR).
Anti-Washout Admixtures
Anti-washout admixtures are used to improve the stability of cement-based systems.
